The School Based Youth health nurse at Milpera High School aims to promote positive health outcomes for young people and their families.

The nurse in the school can talk to a student individually regarding their health needs and can provide health education in classrooms on various topics.  Some topics include the Australian Health care system, growth and development, healthy relationships, nutrition and oral health.

The nurse also promotes positive health outcomes with the whole of school community.  This includes the "Healthy Mouth Day "for students throughout the year that can include oral health assessments and information on how to access followup dental treatment.  The Good start program is a QLD Health initiative that is run at certain times of the year for Pacific Islander and Maori children and focuses on building their knowledge and confidence about healthy eating and lifestyle.   The nurse can also provide health information on Parent Link days that are offered in the school.

Parents or carers who also would like health information on a specific topic related to their child can contact the School Based Youth Health Nurse at Milpera.

Another role the nurse can assist families with at Milpera, is linking the student into specific health care services for families of refugee or migrant backgrounds and advocate for the students needs where English is their second language.  This can include engaging with and working in partnership with the Mater Refugee Complex Care Clinic, General Practitioners, specific hospital services, preventative services such as oral health and if required or requested Multicultural Australia.

The nurse is present at Milpera High on Monday, Wednesday and alternate Fridays.

You can contact her on 3270 3239 and if required a phone interpreter can be booked.

Or you can contact her on Sbyhn.MilperaSHS@health.qld.gov.au
