Principal’s welcome

Dear Readers

On behalf of the staff and students, welcome to Milpera State High School.
Milpera State High School is a unique school where an expert staff, supported by over a hundred volunteers, meets the English language development and settlement needs of migrant and refugee students from over 20 nations and even more cultures. Our students feel a strong sense of belonging and loyalty long after they have finished their course of study at the school.
Located on major rail and bus routes at Chelmer, Brisbane, the school has an attractive campus with a full range of educational facilities ranging from a state-of-the art science laboratory through to a modern Library and eLearning Centre to a school gym. The school has wireless internet throughout and all teaching spaces are equipped for the use of digital learning technologies. All exiting class students are issued (on a short-term loan basis) with internet enabled tablet or laptop computers.
The school is divided into Junior Secondary and Senior Secondary classes with students allocated to Beginner, Post-Beginner and Secondary School Preparation room groups, based upon their age, years of previous schooling and English Language proficiency upon arrival. At times, there may be a Foundation class for students with specific educational needs. The average study time for a student who enters the school at Beginner level is twelve months, to be ready for a second-stage high school or TAFE.
Highly contextualized language learning activities form the basis of our student-centred program. Learning experiences include excursions and camps to develop recount writing skills and the study of carefully chosen novels and academic writing tasks that position students for success at their next stage. This student-centred focus ensures that our students settle well in their new country whilst at the same time preparing them for high school or TAFE. We are fortunate to have the support of our HEAL (Home of Expressive Arts in Learning) service, where therapists help students to settle and be ready to learn, using creative arts and music.
All staff, including a large number of bilingual teachers’ aides, operate in an inclusive and supportive manner to prepare students for future education and life in Australia. To ensure a safe and effective learning environment the school emphasizes a culture of respect for adults, peers and other cultures.
Parents are very welcome to be involved in our school and a variety of open days and events are held throughout the year. As our motto declares, Milpera State High School is truly a “meeting place of brothers and sisters.”
We welcome you to Milpera State High School.
Ian Miller (Principal)
