On behalf of the staff and students welcome to Milpera State High School!
There is no other school in Queensland like ours where an expert staff, supported by over a hundred volunteers, meets the English language development and settlement needs of migrant and refugee students from over 60 nations and even more cultures.
Located on major rail and bus routes at Chelmer, the school has an attractive campus with a full range of educational facilities from a state of the art science laboratory through a modern Library and E Learning Centre to a school gym. The school has wireless internet throughout and all teaching spaces are equipped for the use of digital learning technologies. All exiting class students are issued with internet enabled tablet or laptop computers.
The school is divided into Junior Secondary and Senior Secondary classes with students allocated to Beginner, Post- beginner and Secondary School Preparation room groups. There is a Foundation class for students with specific educational needs. Students are allocated to classes on the basis of the students’ age and English Language proficiency. The usual study time for a student who enters the school at Beginner level is twelve months when they will be ready for a second-stage high school or TAFE.
Milpera State High School students are exposed to a fully integrated “rich task” environment where all learning experiences, excursions or activities are used to further develop the students’ English Language Proficiency and/or settlement into Australian society.
All staff, including a large number of bilingual teachers’ aides, operate in an inclusive and supportive manner to prepare students for future education and life in Australia. To ensure a safe and effective learning environment the school emphasises a culture of respect for adults, peers and other cultures.
This is a wonderful school, a true “meeting place of brothers and sisters”.
